I have been an admirer of a wonderful blog by a young couple, Andrew and Carissa Gallo. They are incredibly talented and are trying to expand their family by adopting a precious little girl from Uganda named Rinah. After learning about what they were doing I felt compelled to donate to their cause. Earlier last week I received a copy of their poster, created by their friend Matt Wahl, as a result of my monetary contribution. Giving is a wonderful thing and I am happy to have helped.

Friday night I went to have dinner with two of my closest friends, John and Sarah Mauro. I was reluctant at first to go to a Thai restaurant, as my first experience with Thai food in general many years ago wasn't so savory, to say the least. On my way home from Jacksonville back to Ft. Lauderdale, there was a terrible accident on I-95, so I decided to take advantage of the time I would have otherwise wasted sitting waiting for the police to allow traffic to pass this accident. As I got off the interstate and entered the exit ramp I saw that the police weren't allowing any new traffic to enter onto the interstate, and the accident was far from cleaned up. So I decided to explore Ormond Beach, and that's how these photos came about.

Jacksonville Trip - June 17-18, 2011

After I left Gainesville yesterday I continued north to see my cousin Ashley and family. When I arrived I was hungry so we hit up Al's Pizza near the Five Points. I stopped into a vintage/antiques shop (I have more photos from the store coming soon) and walked around a bit. Before we left I tried some Plum Wine at a Japanese restaurant nearby. It was great!! Then later Ashley took me to an ultra depressing flea market that was nothing but a skeletal structure with only five to seven vendors in the huge place trying to sell their aged, dusty and used items. Somewhere in there we found an old music vinyl and CD shop. I found Fleetwood Mac CD! Too bad I couldn't find Rumours. Oh well. Later in the evening we had dinner with Ashley's family for Father's Day.

Gainesville Trip - June 16-17, 2011

I decided to take a trip to see my closest friends in Gainesville, Lindsey and her husband Jonathan Nuesca, and Rashon Medlock and his wife Malinda. Rashon and his wife recently rented a nice little house that I think is absolutely a steal because the monthly rent is pretty awesome.

Anyway, we all got together at Rashon and Malinda home, where Malinda and Lindsey made enchiladas with salad, and we watched Lindsey's performance in the University of Florida School of Music show of Mozart's "Magic Flute". It was nice. It has been great to catch up with friends that I probably won't get to see for along time since I'm going to be very busy with Army training and work.

I recently took a trip to New Orleans for an Army event called Strong Bonds for both married couples and singles (I'm single lol). Anyway, on the second evening after another day of sitting in a freezing conference room talking about lofty ideals, such as abstinence and seeking "the right one," we went out to Bourbon Street to frolick (I'm trying to be euphemistic). I should have taken my Canon 5D with me, but very regretfully didn't. However, I did have my iPhone with Instagram. :)

Canon 50mm f/1.8 Lens

Last week I ordered a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens for my Canon 5D Mark II and it arrived today. Yes, I read the reviews and spent the money on this lens with the Pros and Cons already burned into my mind. Having said that, this lens will get me by until I have enough funds to buy Canon's new 50mm standard, 50mm f/1.2. I dream of the day I get that puppy on my 5D!

Anyway for those that don't know, the one that I do have is consistently knocked for the following:

poor build
plastic
toy-like feeling
breaks well within a year of use, sometimes weeks even
poor bokeh--strange blur in the shallow depth of field
slow, noisy focus

I wanted it because it's cheap and therefore immediately available to me to achieve at least half of what I'm looking for in a 50mm lens until the funds are right. lol

Typical day. I check my email and any important reports that catch my interests, although I usually don't have a lot of time to read a whole lot. Then I spend the majority of my day in a classroom teaching. Boring.

By the way this piano was donated to me from a former teacher. I looked inside and it is more than half a century old used to be used by New York City Metropolitan Opera. How it wound up in Florida is anyone's guess. It's mine now.

Busy Crazy Insane, Need to stop or BUST!

I have so much going on right now and I feel like my desk looks. ....Or is it the other way around? How ever it goes, this is what my life looks like at the moment because I have fifty-thousand things going on at once, as I'm simultaneously being pulled in all directions. I have books I need to read or scan through, maintain a healthy diet and work out five days a week, edit several videos and photos, and help take care of my mother's dog. Then there is the Best Warrior Competition that I should be studying for but haven't had adequate time to devote my full attention. All the while, I am stuck in a classroom 7.5 hours per day, five days a week teaching and lesson planning. My email inbox is bursting at the seams with press releases, questions from viewers and subscribers, and work correspondence--all of which I really never get around to answering until late at night. Oh and let me not forget that my brother is going through changes honestly, do not fully understand, and that has me worried to no end. I can't help but feel a sense of responsibility.

It was no statement in a vacuum when it was said that Army reservists are continuously under a high amount of stress between their duty and their personal work and family lives. Very high expectations have been heaped upon my head, or seemingly so in more than one aspects of my life, both by family and those with whom I work. I am so trying to cope with all this, but I literally feel like I am going to pop. I need a moment to sit down and collect myself today...or for several days. Everything just seems off at an odd angle since I got back in December and the start of the new year.

(Background info: This is my mother's dog Reed. In case you don't already know, my mom got Reed from the Humane Society of Broward County to have as company while I'm away from home on Army duty/orders.)

Monday morning, January 17th, I woke up and took Reed for a short walk and to play in the grass. It was an extraordinarily beautiful day, so I grabbed my camera...or I attempted to grab my camera as Reed was literally dragging me in the opposite direction *hand raised* scouts honor. I got outside sat in the front yard, put his leash around my leg--he'll run away--and just started taking some shots. He can be really difficult when it comes to get him to focus on you, but I managed to get one shot of him looking into the camera. Killer was so much easier! View the video notes below the player.

(There is some weird glitch going on with Final Cut Pro on export. You will notice some repeating of a frame or two near the middle and end of this video. I can't figure it out and it's frustrating the heck out of me!! At any rate, please pardon the technical difficulties until I can resolve it and upload a new file.)

About 7 months ago I posted the video "Reed"-- http://vimeo.com/12884111. I explained that we didn't have an exact date of his birth as we got him from the Humane Society of Fort Lauderdale, who gave us an appromximate age. We figured out that he was born in the month of January and therefore declared January 20th his date of birth.

So, here is Reed about 7 months since the last video--much bigger and just as inquisitve, wild and beautiful.

This is my grandmother Elizabeth Moore and she loves Barack Obama.

The necklace was a nice gift from my Mom to her mom. Then there was the gift that I gave her.

This is my Uncle Pip, but that's just his nickname given to him by grandma. Almost every member of my family has a nickname, are called by it and respond to it without even thinking about it. The names all stuck for decades. In fact, I don't even know Uncle Pip's actual name. LOL How sad is that?

This is my brother Jonathan Jackson. If he or my mother are ever hurt I simply couldn't live. I took this photo of him and I absolutely love it. It shows his personality and his life on his face so much. This photo gets to me every time. I love my brother so very much!

I saw this video on thesartorialist.com today and was really excited by it. Scott Schuman is an inspiring blogger photographer for me. I love his work, and I definitely get great fashion ideas from the photos that he posts for males fashion. But in general I like his style and photography.

Ybor City - Tampa, Florida

I went to Tampa, Florida this past weekend and had a nice outing with some fellow soldiers after a stressful day. Ybor City is a really nice place. I definitely plan on going back again.

Lately I have been getting the strangest hankerings for PB&J sandwiches in the middle of the night with a glass of milk. In fact, I'm craving one right now as I type this at 2:41am in the morning. My sleep schedule has been off since I got back from Initial Entry Training (Army training) on December 1st.

After about three years of using Final Cut Express, I finally shelled out the money and bought Final Cut Studio (the $299 Upgrade). I've already been editing some footage with it, taken within the last few days, but I also purchased it because I have a former project from 2007 that is collecting dust, so to speak, that is archived on one of my external drives. I really need to go through the endless hours worth of video that I shot in the Summer of 2007 while on tour with Florida's Singing Sons Boychoir. Anywhoha, I have been intending to buy this along with getting a more professional digital camera. It is my goal to work my way up to professional level, videography, editing and photography. Why? Because I love it all!

I have been trying to study for the Army Board that I have to face on January 8th, and let me tell you that I am totally freaking out. It's too much information to learn in only three weeks, and I told one of my squad leaders that I need to get out of it. I am not ready, but at present I have to do it because I was "voluntold" as they say in the Army. Anyway, I spent about three hours at Borders last night studying the Board study guide from armystudyguide.com. It helps, but time just isn't on my side.

Well hello there. This is my first post. How many people start out their first post like this? I am afraid to know, let alone think how cliché it has become in the United Blogs of America (UBA)--I made that last bit up. At any rate, I have been living on a Posterous blog for about two years now and I just don't feel it's as open as I need it to be. It offers great features that really made it hard for me to leave, but I finally took the plunge, and voila I am back with Blogger again, especially since they have added some new ~~formerly missing~~ features that were the very reasons that I left. I went from Blogger, to Wordpress, Tumblr, then Posterous. It's good to be back home. So I will leave my former blog up on Posterous as an archive of things I've said and done. So having said all that, this blog will be going in a different direction. More streamlined and no junk (meaning nothing unrelated to photography, video editing and my life).

I took a nice ride to the park today, had lunch there, took some photos--nothing great though--and stopped by Starbucks on my way back home. I had what I think was literally called the "Awesome" or "Amazing Oatmeal Cookie" with a Chai Tea Latte. And to kill time I perused on my Facebook iPhone App and watched videos. Eventful, no? lol
